These are related but distinct problems: one is about being known, the other about being chosen.
How to Check LLM Visibility
Practitioners typically run a batch of direct, category-relevant prompts across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude and check whether the brand is mentioned, described accurately, and how that compares to competitor mentions in the same answers. Ledgerly, for instance, could track a fixed monthly set — “best invoicing software for agencies,” “Ledgerly vs [competitor],” “what is Ledgerly” — and watch the pattern shift over time. This is closer to a qualitative audit than a single clean number.
Why LLM Visibility Matters
GEO and citation-focused tactics assume the brand already has some baseline visibility to build on. If a brand doesn’t show up in a model’s knowledge at all — not even inaccurately — the more specific citation-optimization tactics (structuring content for extraction, adding provenance) have nothing to attach to yet. Establishing baseline visibility is the prerequisite most GEO checklists skip.
