Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content to be selected as a direct answer by engines that return one answer instead of a list of links — historically featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes, and voice assistant responses, now extending to AI Overviews and chat-based answers as well.
AEO in Practice
A page written as a clear, front-loaded question-and-answer — a specific question as a header, followed immediately by a direct, self-contained answer — has a real shot at winning a featured snippet or being pulled into an AI Overview, where the same information buried in the third paragraph of a narrative article does not. When Ledgerly, a small-business invoicing tool, rewrote its help article “how to close the books faster” from a five-paragraph narrative into a direct question-and-answer format, it started appearing in Google’s AI Overview for “fastest way to close monthly books” within weeks — a spot a competitor’s article with equally good advice, written narratively, never won.
How AEO Is Measured
Rank tracking tools with SERP-feature detection (most major platforms now flag this) show whether a page currently holds a featured snippet or appears inside an AI Overview for its target queries — tracked separately from standard blue-link position, since a page can rank #5 for a query and still win the snippet above it.
Why AEO Matters
As noted in the GEO entry, the line between AEO and GEO is genuinely blurry in current industry usage. What’s not blurry: both are responses to the same underlying shift — engines answering questions directly instead of just listing sources — and both require the same core discipline of structuring content so an algorithm (rule-based or generative) can extract a clean, self-contained answer.

FAQ
Do I need a different content strategy for AEO versus traditional SEO?
Not a different strategy — an additional structural layer on top of it. The content still needs to satisfy normal SEO fundamentals (relevance, quality, authority); AEO adds the requirement that the actual answer be extractable as a standalone unit.
