Prompt Volume
Prompt volume is the number of times a given prompt, or cluster of closely related prompts, is asked across AI platforms within a given period — the AI-search analogue of keyword search volume in traditional SEO.
Prompt Volume in Practice
Just as “best running shoes” has a measurable monthly search volume in Google Keyword Planner, “best running shoes for marathon training” is being asked — in some volume — across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini as a prompt. The challenge is that no AI platform currently publishes this data directly to the public the way Google exposes keyword volume.
How Prompt Volume Is Measured
This is a genuinely immature measurement area. Semrush’s AI Visibility tooling draws on an internal database of over 239 million monitored AI queries to estimate prompt-level volume and exposure, but this is proprietary, vendor-collected data, not a public utility. In the absence of direct tooling, many practitioners currently estimate prompt volume using traditional Google search volume for the closest equivalent query as a rough proxy — an imperfect substitute, since prompt phrasing and search phrasing don’t always match.
Why Prompt Volume Matters
Without a reliable sense of prompt volume, it’s hard to prioritize which GEO efforts are worth the investment — optimizing heavily for a prompt almost nobody actually asks wastes the same effort that could go toward a genuinely high-volume one. This is one of the areas GEO tooling is expected to mature fastest, since it’s foundational to prioritization the way keyword research is foundational to traditional SEO.

FAQ
Can I just use Google search volume as a stand-in for prompt volume?
As a rough starting proxy, yes, but treat it cautiously — conversational prompt phrasing to an AI assistant often differs meaningfully from typed search-box phrasing, so the two metrics track related but not identical demand.
